Malachite & White Mother of Pearl Inlay Box (BACK IN STOCK)

Our marble inlay box features Malachite, White Mother of Pearl and Jaisalmer stone in Vietnam white marble. For example, Jaisalmer Stone was sourced from Jaisalmer, India, nicknamed "The Golden City."

One of the seven wonders of the world, the Taj Mahal is known for its snow-white marble sourced from Makrana, Rajasthan. Shah Jahan, the Mughal emperor who constructed the Taj in memory of his wife, deliberately chose to use this marble because of its luminous quality.

Lesser known, but equally significant, is that the Taj Mahal is embellished with parchin kari, a Persian term for marble inlay work. Parchin kari is the art of cutting and assembling various semi-precious and precious into geometric and floral motifs so precisely that the contact between each section is virtually invisible.

Artisans who constructed the Taj used as many as twenty-six stones sourced from Afghanistan, China and Turkey, among other countries, to create these designs. Very few artisans in India remain to keep the art and legacy of parchin kari alive.

Keep a piece of Mughal-era architecture alive. Store knick knacks, jewelry, or leave as-is as a statement piece.

Perfect for the friend who hosts mahjong on rotation, the household with a standing game night, or anyone whose table is as considered as their tile rack.It says: “I know this isn’t just a hobby—it’s a standing date with people you love.”

  • Because it elevates the whole ritual—tiles, snacks, conversation—without making game night feel precious or fussy.
  • Because the materials earn their place: wipeable leatherette on top, a cushioned underside, and a tailored case that make setup and storage straightforward.
  • Because it suits both the serious player and the purely social host; it looks considered on the table even when the game isn’t in session.
  • Because it has that signature Poppy balance of design-forward and playful—a high-quality gift with a pov that feels like anything but an off-the-shelf accessory.
  • We chose this mat because it respects the ritual of game night and the reality of the table it lives on. It’s practical and durable, but the design language is pure styling—plaid, color, and a little wink to the handbook that inspired it.
  • The madras plaid was created specifically for this mat, nodding to The Preppy Handbook and classic East Coast summers—so it feels collected, not generic.
  • A spill-resistant leatherette surface and soft poly-cotton underside mean the tiles move smoothly while the table stays protected.
  • It rolls into a cotton twill case, which makes it as easy to bring to a friend’s house as it is to store between games.
  • At 31.5" square, it’s scaled for standard card tables and doubles as a graphic layer in a game room or dining space when the tiles are packed away.
  • Inside the package, they’ll find:
  • Mahjong gaming mat in the exclusive Handbook Plaid – a custom Tigre de Tartán madras designed with an independent female artist, sized to fit most standard card tables.
  • Premium, spill-proof leatherette playing surface with a soft poly-cotton underside to keep tiles gliding and tabletops unmarked.
  • Cotton twill travel case so the mat rolls and stows cleanly between games or travels easily to the next host’s house.
  • Optional rules overlay (when selected) for a slim, unobtrusive reference that sits right on the mat without disrupting the layout.
